Materials and Brands

We educate our clients about basics of art and materials before they purchase from us.

In our daily lives, we talk a lot about ‘quality' of almost everything - be it a gadget, appliance, raw material, clothing, food etc. Every person seems to have his own idea of quality. It is difficult to agree on a single definition of quality, yet we can define different dimensions or parameters against which quality of anyhing is measured. Our quality speaks in itself about reliability, usability, ease of use, value for money and fit for purpose.

On clients demand best brands are availaible on Canvas, a woven material used for centuries for painting which is usually made of cotton or linen and can be stretched over strong wooden stretcher bars, glued onto a board or panel or used unstretched. Although acrylic can be painted on raw canvas, most artists prime the cloth with a ground that allows control over the absorbency, texture an d color of teh surface.

Colours and Brands
Winsor & Newton's Winsor Oil Colour is the brand's student grade oil paint. They are priced well for the amount of pigment and also make a great choice if you need a high volume of color. Winsor Oil Colours are known for how mixable they are, and they're a nice introduction to oils if you are switching from acrylics. They will provide you with a nice range of colors for most projects—from cadmium red deep hue and french ultramarine to burnt sienna and titanium white. They also have a fast drying time of 2 to 7 days.

Gamblin is an American paint manufacturer known for its high-quality oils with a focus on safety. For instance, they don't use lead in their white and have a line of solvent-free mediums, which makes it safer to work in the studio.

Bob Ross Oil Paints : They're also a great mid-price oil paint option. The pigment load isn't as high as some other artist grade paints, but they are priced well. And, of course, the consistency is perfect for Ross' wet-on-wet technique.

Williamsburg Oil : With its thick, gritty consistency and extremely high pigment load, many professional artists swear by Williamsburg. Started by a painter based in Brooklyn in the 1980s, the company was bought by Golden in 2009, but the quality has remained high. Though costly, Williamsburg oil paints are well worth it for their quality of color. As one reviewer notes, "When you want to be able to see expressive brush strokes, it really helps to use one of the best."

Sennelier : It has been in operation since 1887 and prides itself on being the paint of choice for artists like Cezanne, Matisse, and Picasso. Sennelier oil paints are made with safflower oil rather than linseed, which gives a satin finish and prevents yellowing. It also increases the drying time slightly. There are 144 colors in the range,

Blockx : A top tier oil paint at top-tier prices, Blockx has been manufactured in Belgium since 1865. Hand grinding pigments on stone mills, Blockx paints are known for their buttery consistency and are guaranteed to be perfectly lightfast. Iron oxides, earths, and blacks are made with linseed, while all others are combined with poppy oil to prevent yellowing.

Michael Harding : This British brand was developed by an artist in London, with the premium prices reflecting the high pigment load that provides intense color. The good news is, the lack of fillers means that a tube goes a long way. They also mean that the paint shouldn't flake or crack over time. If you want to dip your toe in the water, try out these colours. And you may never turn back.

Schmincke Mussini : These oil paints use a highly traditional resin and linseed oil combination which is said to dry more evenly and prevent wrinkling. They also have a nice range of transparent and semi-transparent colors, which is wonderful for artists who work in glazes.

Old Holland : One of the most reliable names in oil paint, Old Holland has been around since 1667 and prides itself on carrying on the heritage of great Dutch masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer. Like Blockx, all their pigments are ground with a stone, which is a big part of the reason for the heavy price tag for these pigment-rich paints. Thick and stiff, the saturation of color is unparalleled.

OIL MEDIUMS USED BY OUR TEAM

Walnut oil : "Remains glassy, glossy, and hard-wearing over time, lending colors excellent saturation and depth" and "dries a little faster than poppy oil (3-4 days)."

Purified Linseed Oil : Reduces the consistency of oil colour and slows down drying time. In its raw state, it gives colour a high gloss. Diluted 50/50 with turpentine or low-odour thinners, it creates an excellent medium for most types of painting.

Painting Medium : An ideal all-purpose painting medium made of Linseed Stand Oil, White Spirit and Oil of Spike Lavender, which dries to a tough elastic film. Easy to handle, it's a perfect oil painting medium for fine artist, and creates an excellent glaze.

Purified Poppy Oil : A clear oil medium to mix with and reduce light colours. Less inclined to yellow than Linseed Oil, but slower drying. Enhances gloss and flow, but too high a proportion prevents the colour from thorough drying.

Linseed Stand Oil : Reduces the consistency of oil colours and enhances flow. It is viscous and dries slowly to a tough elastic film. Faster drying than pure Linseed Oil. Reduces brush marks.

Alkyd Flow Medium : Slightly thinner than Alkyd Gel, it increases the transparency and flow of oil colour, allowing paint to be brushed out more smoothly. Reduces drying time

Alkyd White : A quick-drying tube colour, which mixes freely with oil colour. Used like traditional oil colour titanium whites, it is especially useful for underpainting and final highlights in portrait work.

Alkyd Gel Medium : Reduces the drying time of oil colours by up to 50%. Has minimal effect on working consistency of the paint, and produces a very durable glaze.

OIL VARNISHES

Retouching Varnish : This versatile varnish is used to bring back the original paint quality of dry or dull oil. Retouching Varnish is reduced with solvents and is much thinner than final top coat varnishes.

Artists' Clear Picture Varnish : A removable picture varnish for a clear even gloss, which will not yellow or bloom. May be used on both oil and acrylic painting.

Artists' Clear Picture Varnish Aerosol CFC free : A removable picture varnish for a clear even gloss, which will not yellow or bloom. When applied lightly by aerosol it makes an excellent Retouching Varnish. May be used on both oil and acrylic painting.

Damar Varnish : A removable picture varnish. Will give a low gloss when applied thinly. Damar dries hard and clear within a few hours.

Matt Varnish : A removable varnish that dries to a matt finish. It can be mixed with Artist's Clear Picture Varnish to give a range of semi-gloss surfaces. It is non-yellowing. Removable with turpentine or white spirit, and can be used to varnish oils or acrylics.

Acrylics have the flexibility to move with the surface, expanding and contracting while still maintaining their integrity.

Acrylic colours are classed as the "new" painting medium, as they have only been around for a few decades. Acrylics have gained in popularity over the years and are now the painting medium of choice.
